We are absolutely delighted to announce that we have the charity WE:ARE Women’s Empowerment and Recovery Educators joining us here at The Heath Bookshop. They will be talking about their new book 'Words from Warrior Women', a collection of poetry written by survivors of domestic violence, released in partnership with Poetry Prescribed. This event is free but donations can be made on the night and proceeds from the book will go to the charity.
Join the WE:ARE team Jacky, Donna and Kirsty as they talk you through how ‘Words from Warrior Women’ came to be. How the idea of setting up a few poetry sessions for their groups started in 2019 at the Million Women Rise march and rally in London after hearing Miss Yankey perform ‘Another Woman’s Cry’. How the relationship with Miss Yankey began during lockdown and continues to this day and how women’s words started to flow and how the original pamphlet plan of a few poems became a book of 166 poems. This book is not just a collection of poems; it is a testimony to the indomitable strength that can emerge from the depths of darkness—a testament to the fact that, together, we can rise above.Unfortunately, this time, Miss Yankey won't be joining us this time but we will be hearing from her via a short video.
Words From Warrior Women:
This powerful book is a testament to the resilience and strength of the human spirit. The poetry collection is a culmination of Poetry Prescribed workshops, facilitated by renowned spoken word artist Miss Yankey. The poems reflect the transformative power of poetry, weaving together stories of struggle, hope, and empowerment. “Poetry is a powerful tool for social change, helping us reclaim our stories, identities, and agency.” Miss Yankey states, "I am honoured to be a part of this process and help bring these powerful voices to the world." "Words From Warrior Women" is an invitation to listen, to bear witness to the strength that lies within us all. It serves as a beacon of inspiration and support for survivors, reminding them of their worth and offering a gentle embrace of solidarity.
Praise for 'Words From Warrior Woman':
‘Helping women who have suffered abuse, pain and exploitation to find the words to express their experiences truly, their hopes rather than hopelessness, and their power is no small thing. I have worked alongside WE:ARE for over a decade now. They support women and help women find their voices and their power. This is not only done through classic support and social work but through creativity, movement and working with language to challenge what their abusers have taught them to think and say. Language and words are the greatest tools in the abuse of women, they cut harder, sit deeper and poison further than any act of physical violence could. We women must also weaponise words to help us heal and protect ourselves. Years of attending group sat WE:ARE has taught me that women have a common language, secret codes and a way of making language work for us. I can think of no greater tribute to all the women who have suffered and to all the women fighting back in order to thrive than a tribute to our language, our words, our power. The pen is mightier than the sword and a pen wielded by women can change the world forever.” - Jess Phillips
This event will take place at The Heath Bookshop.
We look forward to seeing you.
